About Second Wave Counseling

We believe that healing begins with safety, trust, and the right support.

Our team’s roots are in high-crisis residential treatment, where we spent years walking alongside teens with complex trauma and high-risk behaviors. We’ve also worked extensively with families and adults, providing in-home support and crisis intervention to help clients find stability in even the most challenging circumstances. These experiences shaped who we are as clinicians, teaching us how to create steady, reliable spaces in the face of chaos. Our goal is to bring that same depth of experience and care to every client we work with, empowering them to move toward healing and growth.

Meet our founder, Carla Pelcastre

With over a decade of experience in mental health care, Carla offers a comprehensive and nuanced approach to therapy for teens, adults, and families. Her expertise lies in treating complex trauma, guiding neurodivergent individuals in a neurotypical world, and helping couples, families, and individuals move through life’s challenges with resilience and connection. Combining evidence-based interventions with deep empathy and curiosity, Carla helps clients uncover patterns, reconnect with their strengths, and move toward a life that feels more aligned and grounded.

Carla's work is rooted in understanding early experiences and attachment, helping clients untangle patterns that no longer serve them and find healing through self-compassion and body awareness.

Her career began in a residential facility for children in the foster care system, where she worked with teenage girls with extensive trauma histories and learned to navigate high-conflict situations with calm and confidence. Since then, she has supported teens, parents, emerging adults, and couples as a case manager, supervisor, and therapist, focusing on relational healing, attachment, and crisis intervention.

With expertise in complex trauma and high-conflict resolution, Carla utilizes trauma-informed practices, as well as emotionally focused couples therapy (EFT), helping couples heal deep relational wounds and build lasting connection.

Clients are not alone in their journey, and Carla is dedicated to walking alongside them.

She offers telehealth and in-person appointments at the Fort View office, with availability Monday through Friday, including evening hours. Reach out today to schedule a consultation and begin creating the life and relationships you’re seeking.

  • I completed a week-long program at the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development, becoming a Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) Practitioner in 2018. TBRI is a trauma-informed modality rooted in attachment theory that helps us understand behavior as a form of communication, even when it is challenging to interpret.

I am also certified in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and somatic-based therapy, with additional training in Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS), crisis and de-escalation support, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), attachment wounds and disorders, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT).

I am trained in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT), a leading approach for couples backed by over 30 years of research. EFT helps heal relational injuries, untangle harmful interaction patterns, and deepen safety, security, and connection in relationships.

Kayla Grissett, Licensed Clinical Therapist

Kayla Grissett, LCSW, collaborates with Second Wave Counseling to provide therapy services for individuals and families. She specializes in working with individuals navigating trauma, neurodivergence, and high-conflict relationships, offering a thoughtful and individualized approach to healing. By integrating evidence-based techniques with warmth and deep understanding, she helps clients identify patterns, reconnect with their inner strengths, and move toward meaningful change.

She began her career at The Settlement Home, providing care for teenagers in the foster system who had endured significant trauma, abuse, and neglect. She worked closely with youth struggling with anxiety, depression, self-harm, suicidal ideation, disordered eating, and attachment issues. This experience equipped her with the ability to navigate crisis situations with calmness and establish trust in challenging environments.

Following this, Kayla joined Ellie Mental Health, a group practice where she expanded her work to include children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families. She guided clients through a variety of concerns, including anxiety, PTSD, religious trauma, relationship difficulties, neurodivergence exploration, and major life transitions such as divorce or parenting struggles.

Most recently, at Travis County, she has supported adults with histories of early trauma, many of whom have faced housing instability, substance use challenges, and significant emotional distress. She helps clients create sustainable changes, build supportive systems, and work toward long-term stability and well-being.

She offers both in-person and virtual therapy sessions at the Fort View office, with flexible availability, including evenings. If you’re looking for support in building a more connected and fulfilling life, reach out to schedule a consultation today.

Matt Regan, Life Coach & Life Skills Specialist

Man with a beard in a black shirt standing against a stone wall smiling.

Matt Regan collaborates with Second Wave Counseling to help teens and adults overcome obstacles and unlock their potential. Matthew Regan is a Certified Professional Coach with over nine years of experience guiding teens and young adults through life’s challenges. As a coach with Second Wave Counseling, Matthew helps clients break through obstacles, develop essential life skills, and build confidence to navigate their worlds more effectively. His approach is action-oriented, focusing on hands-on support and real-time problem-solving rather than traditional talk therapy. Whether it’s tackling daily routines, reducing school resistance, or creating personalized strategies for managing anxiety, Matthew meets his clients where they are—both physically and emotionally—to provide meaningful, lasting support.

Before joining Second Wave Counseling, Matthew worked at the Mind Body Collaborative as a Peer Support and Coaching Specialist, where he was part of a multidisciplinary team serving high-needs cases. His work centered on helping clients break the cycle of psychiatric hospitalizations, re-engage with their education, and regain a sense of control over their daily lives. With a deep understanding of anxiety and how it impacts functioning, Matthew worked closely with teens to help them return to school, create sustainable routines, and develop coping strategies that fit their unique needs. His ability to step into his clients’ worlds and provide real-time support has been a game-changer for those who struggle to manage overwhelming emotions and responsibilities.

Matthew also served as a coordinator at a residential treatment facility, where he was designated as the first crisis responder. In this role, he helped stabilize and organize responses to crisis situations involving teens experiencing self-harm, runaway behaviors, physical aggression, and verbal aggression. His experience in de-escalation and crisis intervention has shaped his ability to provide immediate, effective support in high-stakes situations.

Unlike traditional therapy, Matthew’s coaching is rooted in action—helping clients take tangible steps toward their goals rather than just discussing them. Whether it’s accompanying a client to a challenging appointment, practicing social interactions in real time, or establishing structured routines, Matthew provides steady, practical support to help clients find systems that work for them. His approach builds confidence, autonomy, and a sustainable path forward, turning daily struggles into opportunities for growth.
