Schizoaffective Disorder
What Is Schizoaffective Disorder?
Schizoaffective disorder is a chronic mental health condition characterized primarily by symptoms of schizophrenia, such as hallucinations or delusions, and symptoms of a mood disorder, such as mania and depression. Schizoaffective is relatively rare, with a lifetime prevalence of only 0.3%. Men and women experience schizoaffective disorder at the same rate, but men often develop the illness at an earlier age. It is often misdiagnosed as Bipolar Disorder or Schizophrenia. Schizoaffective disorder can be managed effectively with medication and therapy. Co-occurring substance use disorders are a serious risk and require integrated treatment. Schizoaffective disorder can be difficult to diagnose because it has symptoms of both schizophrenia and either depression or bipolar disorder. There are two major types of schizoaffective disorder: bipolar type and depressive type.
Bipolar Type: This type includes episodes of mania and sometimes major depression. The mood disorder symptoms align closely with those found in bipolar disorder.
Depressive Type: This type is characterized by symptoms of major depressive disorder without manic episodes.
Schizophrenia Symptoms
Hallucinations: Hearing, seeing, or feeling things that are not there.
Delusions: Strong beliefs in things that are not based on reality.
Disorganized Thinking: Difficulty organizing thoughts and making sense when speaking.
Paranoia
Incoherent or Disorganized Speech
Catatonia (lethargy, rigid movements, immobility, repetitive movements, repetitive speech)
Disordered eating / restriction can also lead to the emergence of symptoms.
Mood Symptoms
Manic Episodes: Elevated mood, increased energy, reduced need for sleep and impulsive behavior. This can appear to be positive (excitement, high motivation) or negative (anger, irritability).
Depressive Episodes: Persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness and a lack of energy or interest in daily activities. There may be decreased or increased appetite, increased sleep or levels of fatigue, or isolation.
Various factors may trigger or worsen schizoaffective disorder symptoms, including:
Stressful Life Events: Significant life changes or trauma can exacerbate symptoms.
Substance Abuse: Alcohol and drug abuse can trigger or worsen symptoms.
Sleep Disturbances: Poor sleep quality or insomnia can lead to symptom flare-ups.
Disordered Eating and restriction: a malnourished brain can trigger or worsen symptoms.
Although there is no known cause of Schizoaffective Disorder, certain factors may increase a person’s risk of schizoaffective disorder, including:
A family history of bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, or schizophrenia
A personal history of substance abuse
A chemical imbalance in the brain
Abnormalities in brain structure, some of which may arise while the brain is developing before birth
A personal history of substance abuse and/or abuse or neglect
